Palatial Antique Mohajeran Sarouk
365 × 510 cm · Indigo, Rose & Ivory
A densely flowering field on deep indigo, drawn with the multicolour botanical richness that defines the finest Mohajeran Sarouk — a collector-grade antique in exceptional, fully piled condition.
A Palatial Mohajeran Sarouk, c. 1920
The Mohajeran Sarouk is regarded by collectors and the trade as the highest quality class within the Sarouk tradition. Hand-knotted around 1920 in the region near Arak in central Iran, this piece comes from an era in which the finest Persian master weavers produced their life's work for discerning Western patrons and the Persian courts.
This is a genuine collector's piece: hand-knotted in hand-spun highland wool, it survives in exceptional condition for its age — full, even pile throughout, supple and elastic, with no thin areas or wear. After more than a century, a state of preservation this complete is rare. Pieces of this class and condition are sought-after collector's items and, at this level, a genuine store of value — an investment-grade antique, not an ordinary old rug.
Colour and Composition
The composition is a richly drawn all-over floral field on a deep indigo-blue ground, organised around a finely worked central rosette medallion — not a dominating central motif but a delicate anchor among large symmetrical flower bouquets, palmettes and curling boteh (paisley) forms. A broad multi-band blossom border on a soft salmon-rose ground frames the field. The palette is exceptionally varied for a Sarouk: indigo and salmon-rose carry red, sky-blue and turquoise, ivory, gold and muted green, all the work of natural plant dyes — a depth of colour no modern dyeing process can match.
Presence in the Room
At 365 × 510 cm (18.6 m²) this is a true palatial format. Three contexts in which the piece reaches its full effect:
- Grand salon and stately interiors: Beneath a historic chandelier, with antique furniture and high stucco ceilings, the Mohajeran completes an interior of the highest rank.
- Contemporary private gallery: In a modern minimalist space with white walls and a few precisely chosen pieces of furniture, the antique becomes the principal work.
- Luxury hospitality: In presidential suites, private clubs or embassies, this rug signals at a glance: here, history meets taste.
