Vintage Bakhtiari Rug
205 × 135 cm · Worn to Perfection
Hand-knotted highland wool in the classical Bakhtiari floral-medallion vocabulary — woven in the central Persian highlands and softened by decades of life into a quiet, lived-in palette.
Provenance and Tribal Heritage
The Bakhtiari are one of the great tribal confederations of central Iran, traditionally semi-nomadic, living in the Zagros mountains south of Isfahan. Their weaving tradition is among the most respected in the Persian rug canon: Bakhtiari pieces combine the structural strength of tribal work with a refined floral vocabulary inherited from neighbouring Isfahan workshops — a distinctive synthesis of nomadic robustness and urban refinement. A well-made Bakhtiari has a working life measured in generations rather than years.
This piece was hand-knotted by Bakhtiari weavers in the Chaharmahal va Bakhtiari region of central Iran, from 100% highland wool on a cotton foundation. The highland wool of the region is naturally rich in lanolin, which gives the surface its characteristic silken sheen and natural resistance to staining. The composition follows the classical Bakhtiari idiom — a central floral medallion anchors the field, with floral motifs spread symmetrically across the inner ground.
Colour and Composition
The palette is built on a quiet ground with muted floral motifs — the saturations the rug carried when new have softened through decades of life into a balanced, natural patina. "Worn to perfection" is the precise term: the surface bears the marks of being used and loved, in a way that gives the rug an authenticity no new production can replicate.
Presence in the Room
At 205 × 135 cm (2.8 m²) this is a generous medium room-size piece. Three contexts in which the vintage Bakhtiari reaches its full effect:
- Modern loft or city apartment: The lived-in patina pairs particularly well with raw concrete, blackened steel, oak and leather — a piece that adds craft and history to a deliberately reduced interior.
- Bedroom or dressing area: Beside or at the foot of a bed, the highland wool gives a warm tactile foundation, and the muted floral field reads as a quiet anchor.
- Country house or stately home: In a room with darker wood furniture and warm lighting, the floral medallion comes home to the kind of interior it was originally made for.
