Bauhaus Vintage Rug
254 × 200 cm · Mauve, Turquoise & Ink Blue
A constructivist Bauhaus composition hand-knotted in wool — stepped geometric blocks on a soft mauve ground.
Bauhaus Vocabulary — Geometric Composition with Modernist Clarity
This Bauhaus-style vintage rug joins the traditional craftsmanship of hand-knotted wool weaving to the visual language of European modernism. There is no medallion and no floral drawing — instead the field is built from asymmetric, stepped geometric blocks, the kind of pure constructivist composition associated with the Bauhaus and De Stijl. Two terraced turquoise forms rise from the lower field, outlined in ink blue and orange, while a horizontal band of fine stripes crosses the upper third. The balance is deliberately off-centre — spacious, architectural, and unmistakably modern.
Colour and Composition
The ground is a soft, slightly variegated mauve-rose — a warm, dusky violet that the hand-spun wool keeps alive and breathing across the surface. Against it sit the two turquoise stepped blocks, sharply outlined in ink/midnight blue and accented with a single line of orange. Crossing the upper field runs a narrow horizontal band of stripes in rose, ivory, black and brown. The restricted, confident palette and the off-balance geometry give the piece its strong graphic, almost gallery-like presence.
Presence in the Room
At 254 × 200 cm (5.1 m²) this is a focused medium room-size piece. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- Modernist living room: beneath a sofa or armchair pairing, the geometric composition becomes a textile anchor for mid-century or Bauhaus-inspired furniture.
- Designer dining for 4–6: under a smaller table, the mauve-and-turquoise palette gives the room a coherent, unexpected colour story.
- Studio or gallery space: the structured, off-centre composition reads beautifully against white walls and architectural lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes this a “Bauhaus” rug?
The term refers to the design language rather than the place of weaving. The Bauhaus and related modernist movements favoured pure geometry, asymmetric balance and a restricted, confident palette over traditional medallions and florals. This rug carries exactly that vocabulary — stepped rectangular blocks, a single crossing stripe band, and clean outlines — hand-knotted in wool rather than printed, which is what makes it unusual.
Is the colour really this unusual mauve and turquoise?
Yes — the ground is a soft, dusky mauve-rose, with two turquoise stepped blocks outlined in ink blue and a touch of orange. Because the wool is hand-spun and hand-dyed, the mauve ground is gently variegated and shifts a little with the light, which is part of the appeal of a vintage hand-knotted piece.
How do I care for a vintage wool rug?
Regular vacuuming without a beater bar is the basic care — vacuum in the direction of the pile. On smooth floors we recommend an anti-slip underlay. Blot spills immediately with cold water and a light cotton cloth, never rub. For a vintage piece we recommend professional hand washing rather than machine or dry cleaning. Handled with care, it will keep its colour and structure for decades.
